New York Skyline over Central Park — large 24x36 sofa anchor print

How to Choose the Right Wall Art Size for Your Space (Complete Guide)

New York Skyline 24x36 sofa anchor print

A large 24×36 print like this New York skyline is the archetypal sofa-anchor size.

TL;DR: For a 3-seat sofa (78–84 inches wide), buy a 24×36 print centered 6–8 inches above the sofa. Above a queen bed: 24×36 or a triptych of 12×16s. Hallway: vertical 12×16 or 16×24. Gallery wall: mix sizes with a 24×36 anchor. Full table below.

The one rule that saves 90% of mistakes

Your art should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Standard sofa is 84" wide. Two-thirds is 56". So you want ~56" of art above it. That's one 30×40 print, or two 24×24s side by side, or a triptych of 20×24s.

The next question is: how far off the ground? 6 to 8 inches above the sofa back. Higher and it feels disconnected from the sofa; lower and it looks crammed.

How to know if your print will feel too small

Cut the intended print size out of newspaper or brown paper. Tape it to the wall. Live with it for two days. If your eye keeps searching for more art, you sized down; go one size up.

Gallery wall sizing

The 2026 gallery wall doesn't follow the old symmetry rules. Modern approach:

  • Anchor piece: one 24×36 or larger. This is 40–50% of the total wall composition.
  • Supporting pieces: 3–5 smaller prints (12×16 or 16×24). Vary orientation — mix landscape and portrait.
  • Spacing: 2–3 inches between frames. Any more and the wall feels disconnected.
  • Frame consistency: matching frame colour (warm wood or brushed brass in 2026) with varied mat widths.

Print size vs image quality

Every Fattrol print is captured at 45+ megapixels, which means we can scale to 30×40 without pixelation. Below that resolution (typical smartphone photos: 12–24MP), 24×36 is the safe ceiling. If you're deciding between our 16×24 and 24×36, always size up — the extra 33% of wall presence is worth the extra €25.

Framed vs unframed

Framed adds €30–80 depending on size, but for pieces over 20×30 it's a false economy to buy unframed — shipping large framed pieces is nearly the same cost, and the framing you'd order locally will run €100+ for museum-grade. Our matte black and warm oak frames match 2026's most-specified interiors.

Frequently asked

What size fits above a standard sofa? For a 78–84″ 3-seat sofa, choose a 24×36 inch print centered 6–8 inches above the sofa back. For sectional or oversized sofas, consider 30×40 or a triptych.

How high should art hang? The center of the artwork should sit at approximately 57 inches from the floor — gallery height. For art above furniture, the bottom edge should be 6–8″ above the furniture top.

Do landscape and portrait sizes translate? Yes — our 24×36 prints are available in both landscape and portrait orientations. For portrait above a sofa, you'd normally hang two side by side rather than one alone.

Can I return a print if the size doesn't work? Yes — 14-day return window, unused and undamaged. See our returns policy.
